The New Prep
Country club codes and collegiate classics. Refined, relaxed, and redefined.
Once rooted in Ivy League uniforms and country club codes, preppy is re-emerging as one of 2026’s defining moods. Shaped by thoughtful tailoring and intentional layering, the look feels polished yet lived-in. Preppy style signals a move toward ease, longevity, and everyday versatility within a traditionally refined aesthetic.
What makes preppy especially compelling right now is its wearability. It is a style that feels accessible and easy to adopt, encouraging personal interpretation rather than rigid rules. Classic cardigans layered over crisp shirts, polo collars peeking out from knits and blazers thrown over relaxed separates.
At its core, preppy style is built on adaptable staples. Oxford shirts, striped poplins, polos, argyle knit cardigans, blazers, pleated trousers and tennis skirts. Pieces that can be mixed, layered, and reworked season after season.
The modern preppy silhouette leans relaxed. Tailoring is eased and proportions are softened. Blazers sit slightly oversized, trousers fall straight, and shirting is roomy enough to layer without feeling restrictive. Skirts are pleated or A-line, while knitwear feels substantial yet slouchy. It is structure without sharpness, polish without constraint.
Footwear remains classic and unfussy: loafers, boat shoes, ballet flats, and clean sneakers. Accessories are minimal yet intentional. Leather belts, canvas totes, structured handbags and tortoiseshell glasses reinforcing the idea of longevity and quiet confidence.
Beyond clothing, preppy represents a broader lifestyle rooted in considered routines and refinement. Leisure sports sit at the heart of modern prep. Tennis, golf, sailing, and equestrian references inform silhouettes and details. Sport is positioned as culture rather than competition, creating an aesthetic that feels active yet composed.
The colour palette remains anchored in collegiate tradition. Navy, cream, camel, burgundy, and forest green are refreshed with soft pastels and sun-faded hues. Butter yellow, powder pink, sky blue, and pale mint appear as accents, adding a sense of optimism and fun. This is a style we’ll see carried over into the Spring season.
Sporty & Rich is a perfect reference point for the modern resurgence of prep. The brand’s relaxed silhouettes, collegiate typography, and sport-inspired essentials draw directly from traditional preppy codes, yet feel contemporary through their emphasis on wellness, leisure, and nostalgia.
Founded by Emily Oberg, whose instinctive sense of style has always set her apart, captures a version of prep that feels authentic, aspirational, and deeply personal. In doing so, Sport & Rich has transforms heritage sportswear into a modern, lifestyle-driven uniform.

Designers like Jonathan Anderson at Dior and Michael Rider at Celine, both recently appointed to their respective houses, have been exploring prep-adjacent codes, incorporating pastel cable knits, relaxed shirting, and heritage-inspired tailoring. Their collections reinterpret classic Ivy League and country-club references with contemporary ease, reinforcing preppy as a living, adaptable aesthetic.
Heritage brands like Ralph Lauren continue to reinforce prep’s Ivy League and country-club roots through tailoring, cable knits, and classic sportswear references. Preppy in 2026 is less about dress codes and more about ease, individuality, and reinterpretation.
I often think of The O.C. TV show when referencing preppy style. That show reframed traditional preppy style through a distinctly West Coast lens, blending classic elements and country club–inspired looks suited to life in Newport Beach. The show presented prep as polished yet casual, mixing feminine, trend-driven, and indie-influenced interpretations within a single aesthetic. Layering, designer denim, and understated tailoring softened the formality typically associated with preppy dress, making it feel youthful and contemporary. In doing so, The O.C. helped redefine early-2000s preppy style as effortless, sun-bleached, and lifestyle-oriented rather than strictly traditional.
Preppy extends beyond clothing into a wider lifestyle narrative: coastal towns, racquet clubs, analog hobbies, and considered routines. Ones that resonates deeply in an era of constant stimulation. In this sense, preppy is as much about values as it is about clothing
The preppy style resurgence reflects a broader desire for stability, routine, and style in uncertain times. It aligns with slower lifestyles, wellness culture, and a renewed appreciation for craftsmanship, an active lifestyle, and analog pleasures. While many styles right now embrace excess, preppy proves that understated dressing can carry a lot of impact.
